Officer Grim honored by family, friends and fellow officers

 

Hundreds of law enforcement officers from throughout Florida and across the country joined family members and friends of fallen Ormond Beach Police Officer Bob Grim to honor his life of service.

Funeral Procession for Officer Grim crossing the Granada BridgeOfc. Grim was remembered as a man of faith, a wonderful husband and father, and a friend to the many thousands of people whose lives were touched by his dedication, compassion and sense of humor.

A motorcade made up of hundreds motorcycle officers, police, fire and EMS vehicles from Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach, Volusia County Sheriff’s department and many other agencies proceeded east on Granada Boulevard and south on A1A to the funeral services Friday morning at the Ocean Center. More than 1,000 people were in attendance for the full funeral mass. Ofc. Grim was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church.

The funeral mass was followed by graveside services at the Daytona Memorial Park near the Our Heroes Memorial. The services included a 21-gun salute, a flyover by four Volusia County Sheriff’s helicopters and the traditional last radio call.

The family of Ofc. Grim expressed their gratitude to the community and all those who came from out of the area to pay their last respects.

Services for Officer Bob Grim:

Public Invited to Show Support During Emergency Vehicle Procession

 

The procession of emergency services vehicles that will form the motorcade to the Ocean Center for the funeral service for fallen Officer Bob Grim will pass through the City of Ormond Beach on Friday morning from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.  The route will begin near the west city limits and proceed east along SR-40, passing over the Granada Bridge to SR-AIA, and then heading south to the Ocean Center.

 

Anyone unable to attend the services at the Ocean Center may show support by watching the procession from the sidewalks along SR-40 and SR-AIA. Citizens who wish to view the procession from the Granada Bridge are asked to park at one of the City Parks at the base of the bridge and not along the roadway.

 

This motorcade is expected to be quite large and will likely include marked agency vehicles from police, fire, and EMS departments from all over Florida and elsewhere in the United States.

 

Citizens who wish to participate in this event by watching the procession are asked to be cautious and please remain on the sidewalks for your safety.

Internment will be immediately following the service.

Emergency services agencies wishing to participate in the funeral procession with a marked vehicle should stage at Riverbend Community Church located at 2080 W. Granada Blvd. (SR-40) Ormond Beach by 8:45 a.m. Friday morning. 

 

(Riverbend Church is at the intersection of SR-40 and Old Tomoka Rd., about 400 yards west of Tymber Creek Rd., on the south side of the street - Map Link). 

 

The funeral procession will leave the staging area at approximately 9:15 a.m. The route will be through the city of Ormond Beach on SR. 40 to SR AIA and then south to the Ocean Center.

Anyone intending to send flower arrangements should send them directly to the Ocean Center at the above listed address.

Obituary for Officer Robert Grim, Sr.

Nov. 15, 2004

 

Funeral Services for Officer Robert Francis Grim, Sr., age 60, who died in the line of duty Sat., Nov. 13th will be held later this week at a place and time to be announced with Prince of Peace Catholic Church officiating (see updated information above).

 

Born on Dec. 7, 1943 in Allentown, PA, Bob moved to this area following his service in US Army. He graduated from the Daytona Beach Police Academy and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the Univ. of Central Florida. Bob was a truly committed and dedicated law enforcement officer who was deeply passionate about the safety of his community in which he served.

 

He began his career in Volusia County in 1966 as a Life Guard. He was then selected to serve as the first school resource officer in the state of Florida. Bob created and established the program which continues to be modeled today. His career provided him with many other promotions and opportunities.

 

Bob organized 28 new neighborhood watch units, which opened the door for the creation of a Residential Security Check System. He developed a Stranger Danger and Bicycle Safety Program and taught D.A.R.E. to many elementary school children. As a Volusia County Sheriff’s Deputy, Bob developed and organized Crime Stoppers in Volusia County into a successful, non-profit citizen based organization. He produced, wrote, and directed crime scene re-enactments for television and radio spots.

 

In 1997, Bob was selected as the Chief of Police of the Daytona Beach Int’l Airport Police Dept. and led a full service Police Dept. In July, 2003, Bob joined the Ormond Beach Police Dept. Bob’s community involvement was matched only with his dedication to his professional involvement and his commitment to his family.

 

He was a member of both the Int’l Assn. of Police Chiefs and the Fl Police Chief’s Association; he was Past President of the Volusia County Police Chiefs Assn. and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Harry Raines Lodge #22. His awards included the Jaycee Law enforcement Officer of the Year, Elk’s law Enforcement Officer of the Year, and a Commendation for Bravery.

 

Bob was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Linda, his son Robert Francis Grim, Jr., and daughter in law Kelli of Ormond Beach, FL; son Jason Grim of Ormond Beach, FL, daughter Tiffany and son in law Paul McAlister of Ormond Beach, FL; his brother John Grim of Holly Hill, Fl; his sister and brother in law Mary and Brian Monahan of Allentown, PA; his granddaughter Abigail, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Mary Grim, and his two brothers Paul and Bill Grim. Memorial Donations may be made in Bob’s memory to the FOPA (Fraternal Order of Police Associates), PO Box 4204, Ormond Beach, FL 32175. Arrangements are under the careful direction of Lohman Ormond Funeral Home.

Police Officer Traffic Death

ORMOND BEACH - Ormond Beach Police Officer Robert F. Grim, 60, was struck and killed early this morning by a vehicle while investigating a traffic accident at the intersection of Wilmette Ave. and N. Nova Rd.

Officer Grim served in police services for 36 years, working with the Daytona Beach Police Department for more than 23 years where he retired as a Sergeant. Grim then went to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office where he worked in Community Relations and the Crime Stoppers Program. In 1997 he was appointed as Chief of the Daytona Beach International Airport Police Department. He joined the Ormond Beach Police Department in April of 2003.

The crash is being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol.
