Nova Community Park Skate Park Expansion
What Are We Doing?
In 2012, the City of Ormond Beach received a grant from Volusia County's ECHO program to expand and enhance the skate park located at Nova Community Park.  With this grant the City plans on making a number of improvements to the existing facilities including an overall expansion of the facility size, the addition of new elements to create a facility that provides new challenges to advanced skaters, opportunities for new skaters to develop their abilities, and an overall enhanced experience for all skaters from Ormond Beach and throughout Volusia County.

The expansion will also include the reworking of certain existing elements to ensure that speed lines are maintained. Additionally, this expansion will include the construction of a dedicated building to allow for a place to check in, and purchase snacks and gear.

Who Is Involved?
The City is working with A.M. Weigel Construction from Daytona Beach who have helped the City with numerous recreation projects including recent additions to the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. A.M. Weigel solicited proposals for a design build contractor to assist with the skate park improvements, from the respondents, local skatepark designer Misiano Skateparks from New Smyrna Beach was selected for this project. Features included with the final design will include:
  • A street plaza with rails, ledges, manual pads and a pyramid
  • A large reworked flow area, with pump bumps and banked walls, bowled corners, pool coping, tile and a 20' long slappy curb!
  • A snake run, bowled corners, pool coping, tile and a 20' long slappy curb!
  • A new beginners' area with low ramps
The following concept includes many of the elements that Misiano will be incorporating into the final park design.

How is the Project Coming Along
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on November 3, 2014.

Since that date work has been progressing non-stop in order to minimize the closure of the facility, though still a work in progress, the park is beginning to take shape.  The project team anticipates completion of the project sometime during mid March with cleanup and final touches rounding out the project by the end of that month.
